I work for Red Hat, where I lead JBoss technical direction and research/development. Prior to this I was SOA Technical Development Manager and Director of Standards. I was Chief Architect and co-founder at Arjuna Technologies, an HP spin-off (where I was a Distinguished Engineer). I've been working in the area of reliable distributed systems since the mid-80's. My PhD was on fault-tolerant distributed systems, replication and transactions. I'm also a Professor at Newcastle University and Lyon.

Are IONA's days numbered?
I've been involved with IONA in one way or another for the best part of 20 years, so although this announcement is no surprise, it's still a sad day.
Yes, I have at least one of every Orbix release until 2004 in the office. Given that they had a similar university background (spin-off from Dublin) I've always felt a close affinity with them too.
I remember when they first made it really big. The rumour was that certain people were driving round the IONA car park in Ferraris!
That is indeed sad.
ReplyDeleteThey were the Irish company that Could take on the big guys (and they did a damn fine job).
They also had awesome packaging for their software (back when software had packaging) - I still have one or two of their disks with booklets.
